A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Journey with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Love Story
Throughout this cartoon adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on gathering teeth from slumbering children and leaving treasure beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more interested in the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the hideous gnome he expected.
A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat
The stage is set for an adventure with a gentle touch of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings as one. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be entitled types, given to stealing anything they want, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.
Naturally, such a setup needs a shared foe to unite against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not particularly skilled, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
There aren’t very many animated films targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for the content 14-year-olds view these days instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.
A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
